Agate is a common mineral since ancient years. A microcrystalline variety of quartz group of varying colours, a chalcedony. Usually translucent in thin slices, otherwise opaque. The stripey appearance is the result of rhythmic crystallization. In the interior of the Agate there are frequently well-developed crystals (eg. Rock crystal, Amethyst, smoky Quartz, Calcite, Siderite).
