Lapis Lazouli is a semi-precious stone and contains pyrite and calcite. The best quality has an intense dark blue colour with minor patches of white calcite and brassy yellow pyrite. Lapis Lazouli was used as a gemstone for millennia by the Egyptians, the mask of Tutankhamun for example has Lapis Lazouli inlay, Sumerians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans.

Info: Its modern name originates in the Persian word 'lazhuward', meaning 'blue' and the Arab word 'lazaward', meaning 'heaven' or 'sky' and came into use in Europe during the Middel Age.
